This notion had a direct influence not only on Wade but also on his colleagues, Eric Worthington and Stan Wigmore. They suggested that games skills should be taught through the principles of play. A. While Thorpe and Bunker were students at Loughborough, being influenced by Wade, Worthington, and Wigmore, they began to consider the benefits of small-sided games and games skills through principles of play.

The teachers’ feedback was very encouraging and positive. At the same time, they also requested some Chinese references about TGfU. In order to draw the attention of more PE teachers, several TGfU articles on teachers’ reactions, students’ enjoyment, and assessment were subsequently published in a local PE Journal (Liu, 1996; Liu & Thorpe, 1997). Additionally, TGfU presentations were made at an international level, including the 1997 AIESEP conference in Singapore. In 2000, to support the requests that PE teachers raised after Thorpe’s workshops, a Chinese research project for writing different lesson plans for ball games was funded.
