As a result of the nurses' referrals, 46 of the 63 defects were corrected. This indicated the need for a new conceptualization of the nature of school nursing.

Anderson, Gottschalk, Grimes, Ives, and Skrovan (1977), in an excellent report, detailed the development and implementation of a curriculum model for community nurses. The investigators provided guidelines for nurse educators to consider in preparing competent practitioners to develop this "new-old" approach to the achievement of health of communities.
